I had a long talk with Adam at The Family Dog last night about motorcycles, road trips, barn finds, and the possibility of cruising the coastal rodes of Vietnam next spring.
Adam did a road trip from one end of Vietnam to the other a few years ago on an old British Triumph motorcycle and had a blast.
(Excepting a week in a Cambodian prison)
(Obviously)
(Yikes!)
He's looking to do it again soon and after talking about my little trip he invited me along "before monsoon season" next year.
This could be interesting.
Adam is all set to fly to Sedona next week to pick up a motorcycle he has been searching the country for - for 3 years.
It's a "matching numbers" 1967 Triumph Bonneville with original sidecar that he'll spend the winter rebuilding in his living room. Very cool dude, this Adam.
I've always been a fan of the pre-1968 BMW Motorcycles, esp. those with the sidecar.
Still really cool and really reliable bikes.
CNN published a list of great drives/rides for the more adventurous set a couple years ago.
You should really check it out: some of these are absolutely incredible.
6. Hai Van Pass, Vietnam
Top Gear presenter Jeremy Clarkson described Hai Van Pass thus: “A deserted ribbon of perfection -- one of the best coast roads in the world”. But on this route, the going gets a little more tough. Hai Van means “ocean clouds” in English. The pass, near Bach Ma National Park, no doubt got its name from the ocean mists that cloud visibility on this winding mountain road overlooking the South China Sea.
